Chevy came to us at 7 weeks of age. He was a son of my phenomenal dog ‘Zak' bred to Piper, a little high drive dog with lots of energy. Chevy was not the puppy I envisioned bringing home. Unlike most of the girls in his litter, he was quiet, but mischievous, and happy to go out and explore the world, but definitely not the high drive pup I wanted. He came home to a busy household with a 3 year old toddler, Logan, to contend with as well as Rick worked full time and myself part time and of course, Zak.

At 5 months of age Chevy ran as a junior test dog (he wasn't old enough to actually compete). He did a wonderful job, marking and retrieving all 4 birds to hand, leaping into the water to retrieve those. The judge behind me, couldn't help saying, ‘wow, what a nice dog'. From that point on, Chevy, is the dog that at no matter what venue, tends to be the one that people notice. Maybe it's his dark red coat, and unfortunately, his light eye. But spectators and judges really like this talented dog.

Chevy easily completed his senior hunter at 2 ½. Two weeks later he competed in his first Draft Dog test (just my second time competing at this). As the only golden amongst the Newfies and Berners, he earned cheers and applause with his willing and easy nature pulling his loaded cart uphill at a trot, then slowing to careful brace the cart downhill and take the corners with ease.

Early in 2009, Chevy and I entered his first obedience trial. He triumphantly came home with a first place ribbon in Novice B and nice score of 194. A few weeks later, he had another nice round, and a consistent score of 194 again.

Just 6 weeks after his third birthday, Chevy completed his Master Hunt title. He was the dog that everyone enjoyed watching. He was also known to have avid lab people say, ‘this is the dog that could make me want to go golden', and others to say ‘what a nice working, level headed dog'.

At the Golden Club of Canada National Specialty in July of 2009, Chevy was entered (as well as his father Zak, out of retirement for the occasion) with the hopes of being a contender for the Nan Gordon Trophy. It is a trophy that has been offered for 26 years and only awarded 9 times. Only once has more than one dog qualified for it and that was in B.C. 9 years ago, when two dogs qualified. To qualify a dog must receive a ribbon in a hunting event, a score in an official obedience class and a ribbon in a conformation class. I can proudly say that Chevy was a star at the WCX (working certificate excellent); he received a 197 in Novice B on an extremely hot day, and then topped the day with a ribbon in the Field Dog class. He had qualified! Unfortunately for him, so did his father with a WCX pass a 197 in Open B and Zak won Best Field Dog in show. When the points were tabulated Chevy had been beat by his father, but, it was record for the GRCC with 3 dogs qualifying! The third dog was Chevy's cousin, owned and bred by Zaniri Goldens as well. It most certainly was a fantastic day.

Chevy has a fabulous mahogany red, correct and ample coat. He often returns from a water mark, shakes and is practically dry. He is 22 inches, has a scissor bite and weights 68lbs. He has an extremely strong topline, excellent angulation, a strong typey head and overall good substance, although slightly lacking in pigment and with a lighter eye.

Although Chevy wasn't the dog I envisioned myself bringing home, he has worked his way deep within our hearts. He is my little shadow, ever watching and waiting for the next training or competition session. Logan and he have fast become good buddies, often knocking each other to the ground and then complaining it was the others fault. After Zak's retirement people often told me you get a dog like him once in a lifetime. I believe I may be blessed with another great dog equal too, or possibly even better than his father.

Chevy is Owned by Lori & Rick Little and son Logan.
