Lad

Co-owner Colleen McPoland, Joanne and I were shocked to lose this outstanding young dog at 4-1/2 years due to complications of heatstroke caused by damage from a previous case of leptospirosis (see story below).

Lad was a terrific working dog, an excellent marker, who loved the water, and was at the same time a team player on blinds. In all, Lad was the epitome of what Joanne and I are trying to accomplish in our breeding program. Lad and Colleen finished his AKC Master Hunter title in 6 out of 7 tests. He had a great year in 2007, finished his Canadian and American Master Hunter titles in the spring/summer and earning a 2nd and 4th place in CKC Qualifying Field Trials. With his year out for the lepto, he had just put everything together at the "big dog" level, and we had great hopes for him in Open trials.

Lad was the perfect combination of an excellent retriever, perfect Golden temperament and very nice conformation. Lad earned 3rd place in the 2007 Golden Retriever Club of America Novice Dog conformation class, wih the judge commenting "also a very nice type dog, topline, forechest and rear . . .very active on the move, very effortless"

Much more importantly, he had the most wonderful temperament and personality in the world. It was a total joy to see his tail wagging his whole back end when coming up to his blinds, and having him wind between your legs when greeting you. He loved people, kids, dogs, cats and was truly rightly named "A Happy Lad".

We are especially proud of Colleen's success in finishing Lad's AKC Master Hunter title in 6 out of 7 tests. Lad was completely amateur owner trained and handled. Lad is a wonderful example of what we are trying to accomplish with our breeding program; a fabulous Golden temperament, good looks, great water desire and with all that, he was a team player! He had a great year in 2007, really coming together as a "big dog" in the field trials, finishing his Canadian and American Master Hunter titles and earning a 2nd and 4th place in CKC Qualifying Field Trial Stakes, making him a Qualified All Age dog. Lad consistently earned positive comments from judges along the way. Thank you so much Colleen for your faith in Lad, your hard work and most of all, for your friendship. And to top it off, he is producing puppies just as nice, like Chica (co-owned with Colleen), Win and Chilli (CARDA SAR dog).

Lad's Contribution to his Offspring::

Lad was a very attractive dog, who we were confident would earn his Canadian Championship. Lad showed his conformation ability at the 2007 GRCA National Specialty, taking a 3rd place in the Novice dog class. Lad is out of our second field x show cross breeding and has an outstanding pedigree to contribute. He had a lovely head and bite with full dentition, excellent breed type, topline, and nice side movement. His two daughters are competing in Master Hunter and demonstrating the same wonderful talent and working ability as their dad. OFA Excellent Hips, Eyes, Heart and Elbows clear. Note we do have frozen semen available in both the U.S. and Canada - CONTACT COLLEEN

Lad's Littermates:

  • SR Zaniri's Island Girl Can CD WCX SH "Piper" is owned by Linda Langford and busy earning more hunt test titles. She has only one more leg to go for her Canadian Master hunter title and will keep working on obedience. Her 2006 puppies out of Zak are already earning titles, showing excellent marking skills, high trainability and strong water courage.
  • Zaniri's TNT Golden Riot Am JH "Rumble" is working occasionally on his Senior Hunter training, and in the meantime is a wonderful hunting companion for owner Ted Grichuhin (and buddy to Anne).

Lad x Maplebears Island Fancy Can JH:

  • Zaniri's Cheeky Monkey Can SH WCX Am JH WC (Chica) is Joanne's hunter, showdog and all round super buddy (hopefully Joanne will be able to make her a CH MH *** dog). She is now running in Master and we hope will be running Qualifying field trial stakes in fall 2008. She is co-owned with Colleen and they both run her at trials.
  • Zaniri's Bear Me In Mind Can CD TDX WCX SH (Win) is owned by our good friend Vida Ross (owner of Meg MH UD) and is competing in Master hunt tests and CDX. We also have hopes for her to have the special CH MH UD status someday.

  • Zaniri's Spicey Chili Pepper (Chili) is owned by Gwen Milley. They have passed the CARDA Senior Search team assessment and are working on Search and Rescue at Whistler.
  • Zaniri's All Riled Up (Riley) is owned by Angela and Brian and will be checking out agility with his new family.

The very sad story of Lad's loss:

Colleen and her partner Mark were out training in early October, 2007, a very pleasant day with temperatures in the high 60's to low 70'sF.  Lad had finished training and they were walking back to the truck when Lad became wobbly.  They immediately doused him with water recognizing the signs of heat stroke although it was surprising given that it was neither that warm nor had the training session been overly arduous or long.  Lad appeared to begin recovering normally, with his temperature registering normal within forty five minutes.
However, within fifteen minutes after this, it became apparent that Lad was taking a turn for the worse.  He was rushed to the emergency hospital and despite heroic efforts through the next 24 hours, his kidneys failed.  He had gone into shock and his whole system was shutting down.  We lost him the next day.

Lad suffered a life threatening bout of leptospirosis earlier in his life, and took many months to recover. It seems that his system, especially his kidneys were compromised by that illness and he was left vulnerable to something like this, which we understand now is not unusual.

Lad's owner Colleen McPoland and her partner Mark Akkola are both devastated at losing a dog so close to their hearts and at such a young age.
