Zaniri Golden Retrievers (Perm. Reg'd)

Puppies Hiking in The Woods

Joanne & Laureen Kinney

We bought our first show/obedience Golden in 1977 and went on to make a lifelong hobby of training and working with Goldens. We have been fortunate to live in various parts of Canada over the years and had the opportunity to see and learn about Goldens across North America.

Through the years, we have competed in nearly every venue, taken and taught all breed obedience classes, organized temperament tests and attended and organized seminars and health clinics to continue learning about Goldens. Our main interest now is Hunt Tests and we normally show our own dogs to their Canadian Championships and fit in a little tracking and obedience.

Location

We are located on 5 and 1/2 private acres in the south Surrey area of British Columbia, just outside Vancouver and about 5 minutes north of Blaine, Washington where the I5 crosses the Canadian border. We are about 30 minutes from Vancouver International Airport, 30 minutes from Bellingham, Washington airport and about 2-1/2 hours from Seattle-Tacoma Airport.

Our dogs live in the house with us, but have room to run and a small woods to take the puppies hiking to help them build their intelligence and confidence. We also have a large shop for indoor obedience and "yard work" which comes in handy in our rainy winters.

On the other hand, we cannot say that our dogs are perfectly trained as you see. Chica was only a puppy so had some excuse::

Breeding Program

We have worked with a number of people to build and maintain a quality breeding program to produce sound and correct Golden Retrievers, with good temperaments. In particular, we emphasize easy going Goldens who are pleasant companions, calm in the house, and yet with high desire and enthusiasm for work. We have bred in partnership with many friends over the years; Dr. Cindy Trann of Goldendream, Paula and Larry Bernard of Maplebear and Debbi Bouwkamp of Rockcreek. In addition, several of our performance and companion puppy owners have allowed us to breed some special Zaniri youngsters. This has allowed us to maintain a meaningful breeding program and keep some flexability in our gene pool but have only a handful of dogs, all of whom live with us in the house, and allow us to have the time to effectively train given our work and club commitments.

We prefer our dogs to go to homes where they will be family companions and whenever possible, that they have the mental and physical benefit of hunting or competing in various performance events. By working with our puppy buyers and encouraging them to get involved, we have been fortunate enough to have many of our dogs trained for hunt tests and of course, many do hunt with their owners. Most of our puppies go to novices who have a lot of fun learning about the fun in having a working partnership with their Golden and demonstrating their abilities for the world to see.

Throughout the years, we have taken care to test for inherited diseases and use healthy breeding stock. Hip dysplasia is the biggest problem in Goldens in our view, as it leads to a long life of pain and discomfort for puppies so we have been very selective in using only dogs in our program that come not only from generations of clear hips but always research siblings of parents and grandparents. We keep on top of the latest testing advances and new indications of inherited disease and by keeping in close touch with all our "puppy people" we are able to spot early signs of problems and shift our breeding directions. We want to maximize temperament, physical health, working ability and correct breed type and while multiple goals are a challenge and require some risks, that is how we can support our wonderful breed.

Looking for a Puppy? Upcoming breeding plans are outlined on the Pupppy Plan page. Please take a look and if you are interested, email us and give some details on your lifestyle, specific types of activity and personality you are seeking, and an special preferences. We maintain a fairly simple written contract, with straightforward guarantees for genetic defects. As with anyone who produces more than a litter or two, we are bound to produce at least a small number of health problems, an occasional less than ideal Golden temperament or a disappointing conformation dog but we put our high priority on avoiding the most serious inherited problems and working with our puppy owners to address any problems we do find in a mutually satisfactory way.
